Nayler, James

Nayler, James
(c. 1618–60)
   Sect Founder.
Nayler was born in Yorkshire and he fought on the Parliamentary side in the Civil War. In 1615, he was converted by George fox to Quakerism and became a travelling preacher. He suffered several terms of imprisonment and became involved with the Ranters, an antinomian sect which appealed solely to personal religious experience. After it was rumoured that Nayler had raised a woman from the dead, he was heralded as the new Messiah. He initially seems to have resisted this, but subsequently, in 1656, he entered Bristol in triumph with his followers. The authorities arrested him and he was whipped and pilloried. He was eventually released from prison in 1659 and seems to have been reconciled with Fox and the Quakers before his death.
